i hate hate hate that the “NINEteenth century” is talking about the EIGHTEEN hundreds. i know why this happens mathematically and stuff. but isn’t it just so fucked up? doesn’t it feel so wrong? dont you have to fight with your brain to reconcile the difference? is this not a sign of humanity’s eternal despair?

Makes me nuts too.

we all suffer because the people working on the calendar didn’t have a computer science background

Listen. I did suffer because of this indeed.

Once, a student of mine - a university student studying German literature to become a damn teacher - did a presentation about “X in the 18th century in Y place”. It was in a class where we read a lot of plays from, you guessed it, the 18th century.

She started with: “In 1804, when Napoleon was occupying Y place…” And I, in my naivety, thought: “Oh. She’s starting backwards, yes, Napoleon is relevant to this, it can be done this way.”

Friends, Romans, countrymen. I was wrong.

In response to historical inaccuracies in Napoleon (2023) director Ridley Scott said, “Excuse me, mate, were you there? No? Well, shut the fuck up then.” This is not a joke, he really said that.

i have. a lot of big complicated thoughts about how people tend to treat depression as like. as if it’s nothing. like it’s the most basic easiest mental illness ever. why do we do this. depression kills people. constantly. people will throw around “depression and anxiety” and say they’re totally normalized nonstigmatized disorders and then you realize they only think mild versions of these disorders exist. i have a laundry list of mental disorders and the only one that’s ever actually put my life at risk was depression. if you throw around depression as if it’s the mildest least harmful mental illness ever have you considered shutting the fuck up.

Remembering the one Hades and Persephone fanfic retelling I read where the author had clearly never eaten a pomegranate in their life and just had the character in the Persephone role take a bite out of the side like an apple
